Sue Morgan
Sue Morgan completed a doctorate in German philosophy and worked in the city as a corporate tax lawyer before being forced to retire in 1998 because of a diagnosis of schizo-affective disorder. Her experiences during hospitalization ignited a passion for visual expression, leading her to pursue a first-class degree in Drawing from Camberwell College of Arts in 2008. In 2009, she was a finalist in the DLA Piper Art Award, followed by a solo exhibition at Sarah Myerscough Fine Art in Mayfair in 2010.
In 2024, Morgan collaborated with filmmaker Leanne Dimant and producer Lucy Owen to create a short documentary film exploring her artistic practice and its connection to nature. The film, funded by Art with Impact, was produced in collaboration with Bethlem Gallery and the Occupational Therapy team.
Morgan's early works, created during her time in hospital, often serve as poignant mood diaries. Her later work delves deeper into neuroscience and phenomenology, culminating in the installation "The Various Lives of Thought: Fictional Machines, Thought Droppings & Mental Maps." This installation, first exhibited at Camberwell UAL, has since been showcased at the London Art Fair and Sarah Myerscough Fine Art.
Morgan's artistic process is characterized by a constant exploration of ideas and materials. She draws inspiration from a wide range of sources, including literature, science, and philosophy. Her work often blends the serious with the playful, incorporating scientific concepts into her art while simultaneously critiquing the limitations of scientific objectivity.
With a diverse body of work encompassing ceramics, installations, and drawings, Morgan's artistic practice continues to evolve. Her work invites viewers to consider the complexities of the human mind and our relationship to the natural world.
